With more than 107,000 attendees from over 200 countries, Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 in Barcelona, Spain, showcased the future of innovative mobile devices and services across the world. Qorvo’s Brent Dietz already shared his top three takeaways from MWC 2018 — 5G, the Internet of Things (IoT) and diversity — but here’s a recap of Qorvo’s key highlights from the show.

    Featured highlights

We made 5 significant announcements during MWC 2018, including how our RF Fusion™ solutions are bringing breakthrough functional integration and helping customers' products such as the Microsoft Surface Pro with LTE Advanced.

2017 GTI Award for “Innovative Breakthrough in Mobile Technology” – QM19000

This year’s Mobile World Congress started with a bang for Qorvo, as our president of mobile products, Eric Creviston, accepted the GTI 2017 Award for “Innovative Breakthrough in Mobile Technology.” This prestigious award from the Global TD-LTE Initiative (GTI) recognizes our QM19000, the world’s first 5G RF front end unveiled at last year’s event. The GTI award was the result of our talented engineering teams' focus on paving the way for 5G, for a product that’s been demonstrated and tested over the past year.

Qorvo and National Instruments announce collaborative test and demo of 5G RF FEM

In partnership with National Instruments (NI), we announced the demonstration and testing of the first commercially available 5G RF front-end module (FEM), Qorvo's QM19000, using National Instruments' PXI system. This test and measurement milestone is part of an ongoing effort to help customers design and test 5G technology for early deployments. Recent articles since MWC (check them out in our related content below) have highlighted the significance of NI’s test and measurement technology in the development of 5G, and we couldn’t be prouder to be involved.

Eric Creviston on Qorvo's 5G RF solutions

As 5G looks to become a reality in 2019-2020 for operators and device manufacturers, the race is on to get 5G NSA (non-standalone) infrastructure implemented globally. Initial mobile deployments will use the NSA 5G New Radio specification, which creates additional complex RF challenges for smartphone OEMs because of the need for simultaneous 4G LTE and 5G connectivity. Creviston talked to Mobile World Live onsite in Barcelona about what 5G means for smartphone users and OEMs, as well as Qorvo's plans for leading the delivery of 5G RF solutions.

Eric Creviston discusses the future of 5G with Mobile World Live, at MWC 2018

    Our Thoughts:

    • With 5G-enabled smartphones likely launching as early as next year, the buildout of 5G NSA networks and delivery of 5G-enabled mobile devices will create the first wave of 5G growth. The second phase of 5G will be smartphones and mobile devices that adhere to the SA (standalone) 5G NR standard.
    • We're already helping our customers navigate the complex elements that 5G will introduce to the RF front-end design, assembling a broad portfolio of products and new technologies to help solve their toughest RF problems.

    What’s next?

From gigabit LTE in today's smartphones to 5G NSA, IoT devices, connected cars and other not-yet-imagined use cases, one thing is for sure: It’s an exciting time to be in RF!
